Björn Runefors, Music Director

The Swedish conductor, flutist and singer Björn Runefors relocated to New Brunswick in 2003 and now lives in Keswick Ridge outside Fredericton.

Björn was appointed Music Director of the Fredericton Choral Society in 2006. Their first performance under his baton was the Brahms Requiem. Since his appointment the choir also has performed Handel’s Messiah (twice), Bach’s St. John Passion, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Charpentier’s Messe Minuit pour Noël, The World of Opera (an evening of opera choruses), Mozart's Requiem and the annual St. Cecilia Day’s concerts.

Björn is the Director of the UNB (University of New Brunswick) Conservatory of Music. He conducts the UNB Chorale and the UNB Concert Band and teaches music theory at UNB. Björn is also the founder and director of the Fredericton Youth Orchestra at the UNB Conservatory of Music.

Björn is a multi-faceted musician. He has performed in professional orchestras and choirs both in Sweden and in Canada. He has written music for and performed as an actor at theatres in Sweden. As a teacher, Björn has been on faculty at music colleges in Sweden and in Stockholm he was the founder and director of a youth orchestra that toured extensively across Europe.

Björn completed his undergraduate studies at Lund University in Sweden and went on to earn a Master of Music degree from McGill in Flute Performance.
